How to Check If Your Appliance Has Been Recalled

Updated

Short answer

Search the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall list at cpsc.gov/Recalls with the brand and appliance type, then match the model number range in any notice. Each recall notice states the remedy the company is offering. Do it before paying for a repair.
  1. Get the full model and serial number from the tag (where to look).
  2. Search the CPSC recall list for the brand and appliance type.
  3. Open any matching notice and compare model numbers and manufacture dates.
  4. Follow the remedy in the notice, usually by contacting the manufacturer.

Registering the appliance with its maker also puts you on file as the owner; Samsung and Speed Queen both look up coverage by serial number (Samsung, Speed Queen).
