Refrigerator Not Cooling? Whirlpool's Checklist Before You Call

Updated

Short answer

Whirlpool's list for a refrigerator that is not cooling starts with free checks: is it in Demo or Showroom mode, are the air vents blocked, do the condenser coils need cleaning, are the controls set for the room, is it in a garage below 55°F, and has warm food or frequent door opening overloaded it. Allow 24 hours after any change.

The checklist

  1. Demo or Showroom mode: lights on, no cooling. Check the Use and Care Guide to turn it off (Whirlpool).
  2. Blocked vents: cold air reaches the fresh-food side from the freezer through vents; keep food off them.
  3. Condenser coils: dust, pet hair and grease stop them shedding heat (Whirlpool).
  4. Clearance: about half an inch on the sides and an inch at the back.
  5. Room temperature: Whirlpool designs its refrigerators for 55°F to 110°F (Whirlpool).
  6. Recent load: a large amount of warm food or many door openings; turn the control colder and wait 24 hours.

Measure it

The FDA says to keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F, and to use a freestanding appliance thermometer because few controls show the actual temperature (FDA).

When it is a repair

If the checks pass and it is still warm, common repairs are a fan motor, thermostat or defrost heater at $100 to $250 each, a control board at $200 to $500, or a compressor at $300 to $800 (Angi). See refrigerator repair.

Quick answers

Why is my refrigerator not cooling but the light is on?

Whirlpool lists Demo or Showroom mode first: the lights work but cooling is off. Then blocked vents, dirty coils and control settings.

How long after adjusting should I wait?

Whirlpool says to turn the control colder and wait 24 hours for the temperature to adjust.

Rather have someone fix it?

Tell us the appliance, the brand, the model number and what it is doing. A local technician calls back with a time and a price before any work starts.
